Malt Donkey Institute

Experimental Ale Series #701

Malt Donkey Experimental Ale is a small-batch beer brewed using trial and surplus malts sourced from the Adelaide Hills. These malts, often reserved for testing flavor, yield an ale with a straightforward malt-driven profile.

The beer is unrefined in style and produced as part of an experimental brewing process rather than a core release.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Pale amber with a light haze and a modest white head.
Aroma: Grain-forward with notes of raw cereal, hay, and a faint nuttiness. Subtle earthy tones in the background.
Palate: Light to medium body. Flavors of biscuit malt and toasted grain dominate, with hints of huskiness from the test malts. A touch of herbal bitterness balances the sweetness.
Finish: Dry and slightly rustic, leaving a lingering cereal note.

How to Serve

Pour Malt Donkey Experimental Ale into a stemmed wine glass to highlight its malt complexity. The wide bowl allows the grain-driven aromas of biscuit, hay, and light nuttiness to open up, while the tapered rim focuses these scents as you sip. Serve lightly chilled, around 8–10°C, so the cereal sweetness and earthy depth remain balanced without muting the rustic finish. Take small sips to notice how the ale evolves as it warms, revealing more nuance from the Adelaide Hills test malts.

Shipping & Handling

ContentOrders are packed securely to protect the bottles during transit. Standard delivery times within Australia are 3–7 business days depending on location. Barley region matters,
we know best.

The flavour of Grand Cru Ale starts in the ground.

Barley grown in different regions like the Barossa, McLaren Vale or the Adelaide Hills develops unique characteristics based on the soil, climate, and season. These differences carry through the malting and brewing process, shaping how the final ale tastes. It’s the same idea as wine: place changes everything.
